For those new to the world of anabolic steroids, the names of different compounds are amongst some of the most confusing aspects of the supplements. There are the chemical names, the various brand names, and the street or slang names for each product. If a product is recommended to you from a buddy or a coach, it may take you hours to find said product online, from a trustworthy source.

For example, “Winstrol”, a common steroid consumed in tablet form, also comes in the name of “Stanozolol”, amongst a host of other street names such as 17-AA. To help you figure out exactly what exactly you’re prescribed and to reduce confusion, we have prepared a list of the top 10 common steroids, their names, and effects.

Anabolic Steroid #1: Fluoxymesterone (Halotestin, Stenox)

Commonly known as “Halo”, this a 17-alpha alkylated steroid altered in order to withstand the liver’s “first pass” metabolism to a better degree. For this reason, the liver won’t activate the compound before it exerts its effects. Without the presence of this alkylation, you would require much higher concentrations to get results, as is the case with any 17-AA.

For application, Fluoxymesterone has a reputation of being able to greatly increase the strength of users. However, gains in muscle mass on this steroid aren’t very great. In clinical settings, dosages range from 2.5 mg to 40 mg a day in divided dosages. Bodybuilders have been known to use from 30 to 80 mg per day.

Fluoxymesterone has a half-life of approximately 9.2 to 10 hours, and does not aromatize nor convert into estrogen. This means the risk of getting gyno (gynecomastia) is small to non-existent.

First introduced to athletes in the 50’s, bodybuilders caught on to Oxandrolone quick and started using it for muscle gain purposes.

This compound is aromizable, and therefore can increase estrogen levels. It doesn’t bind very well to the AR, and hence works by antagonizing the effects of catabolic glucocorticoids.

Dianabol, otherwise known by a whole host of other names such as D-bol or Anabol, has a great reputation for increasing both size and strength of bodybuilders to a large degree. Its halflife, while not officially documented, is estimated to be between 4 to 7 hours. Bodybuilders typically stack around 25 to 100 mg per day depending on whether it’s used alone or in conjunction with another steroid.

Anabolic Steroid #3: Oxandrolone (sold as oxandrolone powder or Oxandrolona)

Oxandrolone, otherwise known as Anavar, is an 17-AA that doesn’t aromatize, but will bind to the AR as long as dosages are high enough. The compound is known to increase the strength in bodybuilders, as well as providing a hardening effect for muscles. Research shows Oxandrolone reduces subcutaneous fat to a greater degree than other common compounds such as testosterone. The halflife of Oxandrolone is 9 hours.

Anavar, along with most of the other synthetic steroids, are thought to be equally anabolic as Testosterone on a mg to mg basis, while minimizing androgenic side effects. Several studies suggest Oxandrolone posessing six times the standard anabolic effect of methyltestosterone in human subjects than other compounds. In clinical settings, dosages have ranged from 1.25 to 80 mg per day. Bodybuilders may take anywhere from 25 to 160 mg per day.

Anabolic Steroid #4: Methenolone Acetate and Enanthate (Primobolan)

Methenolone Acetate doesn’t aromatize and can either be ingested via its acetate version, or injected via the enanthate. This steroid does bind rather well to the AR, but leads to good gains in lean muscle mass as it causes next to zero water retention in the body.

Clinical dosages that are commonly seen with methenolone range from 10 to 20 mg daily, sometimes a little higher for the oral version. For the enanthate version, dosages are usually 100 mg every two to four weeks. Bodybuilders typically use 400 to 1000 mg a week. The half life is around seven days, and slightly shorter to that of Deca.

Anabolic Steroid #5: Oxymetholone (Anadrol)

Oxymetholone can’t aromatize but has been known to have progestenic properties, which can cause water retention. While it has a great reputation for increasing muscle mass and strength to a large degree, the water ratio too that is high. It’s also thought to have a very high anabolic/androgenic ratio.

The typical dosage in clinical settings is one to five milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. So, a 150 pound person would consume anywhere from 68 to 341 mg per day. However, the higher dosages aren’t employed that often. Bodybuilders typically consume around 50 to 150 mg per day. Half life is approximately 7 to 15 hours.

Anabolic Steroid #6: Testosterone Enanthate, Cypionate, Propionate, Suspension (commonly called “T”)

One of the most well known, this compound is widely used for its ability to aromatize and bind to the AR. It’s well known for its ability to produce great gains in muscle size and strength, provided that the dosages are high enough. Some downsides are its water retention and above average amount of side effects.

Clinical dosages vary; enanthate are injected every two to three weeks at dosages of around 200 to 300 mg. Bodybuilders typically use around 500 to 1,000 mg per week. Each variant, depending on their names, have different half lives and should be further understood before consuming.

Anabolic Steroid #7: Nandrolone Decanoate and Laurate (commonly “Deca”)

You’ve probably heard of Deca over anything else. This popular compound binds very well to the AR and doesn’t aromatize. It can produce moderate gains in muscle mass with little water retention. However, when higher dosages are used, its progestenic effects can lead to higher water retention, so portion well.

In clinical settings, dosages are around 50 to 100 mg every three to four weeks. Bodybuilders typically use around 300 to 800 mg per week. Deca has a half-life of 6-8 days, so plan your cycles accordingly.
